Govt approves merger

4 Jan 2005

Argentina’s Ministry of the Economy has approved the merger between cellcos Unifón (a subsidiary of Spain’s Telefónica Móviles) and Movicom (BellSouth) on the condition that the new company relinquishes part of the spectrum that the two companies will bring to the deal. According to Business News Americas, a previous resolution by the communications ministry SeCom stated that the authorisation for the merger was based on Unifón returning 42.5MHz of spectrum. Unifón claims that this process could take up to four years due to the inherent difficulties in migrating users.
