Antel launches Wi-Fi and EDGE over Ancel network

4 Jan 2005

Uruguay’s incumbent PTO, state-backed Antel, says it has launched Wi-Fi and EDGE services over the GSM network of its mobile arm Ancel. The telco hopes to deploy 50 hotspots in the country during the course of 2005 and has entered talks with other operators to formalise roaming agreements between their networks. EDGE is already available in the capital Montevideo, provincial capitals and 40 major cities across Uruguay. Ancel launched the service in October 2004 with an initial investment of USD500,000.
