Antel hopes to reach one million fixed lines by year end

22 Dec 2004

State-owned national PTO Antel says it has 997,000 fixed lines in operation, up from 935,000 at the start of the year, and hopes to break the one million barrier by the end of this year. In addition, it says its mobile arm Ancel now has 385,000 subscribers, a market share of nearly 70%, thanks in part to a USD58 million investment in 2004 to develop its GSM network. Antel also increased the number of public telephones in operation from 12,400 to 14,000 and installed 220 ‘social phones’ enabling users in remote areas to make free calls of up to three minutes’ duration.
