Hutchison 3 UK set to sue government over 3G targets

17 Dec 2004

Hutchison 3 UK is planning to launch legal action against the government if the regulator Ofcom goes ahead with its planned relaxation of UMTS network coverage targets. According to Netherlands-based Telecom.paper, cellco Hutchison wants compensation for the huge investment it was obliged to put into its 3G rollout, as it feels that Ofcom is about to hand other UK licence holders a competitive advantage. The company has so far invested over GBP1 billion to become the only operator to reach the 80% 3G penetration target set by Ofcom as a condition of the UMTS licence auction of 2000.
