China’s biggest telecoms equipment maker Huawei Technologies has been selected to build Telfort Mobile’s 3G network in the Netherlands – the first such contract secured by the Chinese firm in Europe. The multimillion euro deal is a milestone for Huawei which has been slowly building its international business through steady expansion in the Middle East, South America and Asia. In securing a toehold in the European market, the Shenzhen-based company will roll out a nationwide UMTS network for Telfort, providing it with full 3G capability and preparing the network for HSDPA. Under the deal the Chinese firm will also set up a centre to provide R&D support in order to develop mobile data in the Netherlands. The contract marks the fifth UMTS deal secured by Huawei across the globe: it is already building networks for Etisalat (UAE), Sunday (Hong Kong), Emtel (Mauritius) and TM Cellular in Malaysia.
