Telmex gets green light for Brazilian cable deal

8 Dec 2004

Brazil’s telecoms regulator Anatel has approved the acquisition by Mexican company Telmex of the Brazilian cable operator Net Servicos. Telmex now has the go-ahead to buy up to a 49% stake but, according to World Markets Research Centre, it is thought to favour taking a stake of around 30%. Net Servicos had 1.4 million pay-TV customers and more than 130,000 broadband subscribers at the end of June. Before the deal can proceed it must first be approved by Brazil’s competition authority Cade.
