mmO2 prepares HSDPA/IMS trial

7 Dec 2004

UK mobile network operator mmO2 says it is preparing to launch high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and internet protocol multimedia services (IMS) on the Isle of Man next summer, capable of providing download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps. The ultra-fast 3G service will initially be available only to laptop users via a plug-in data card, although the operator is aiming to upgrade its full-blown commercial UMTS network to the higher speed by the end of 2005. The HSDPA network on the Isle of Man was built by Lucent Technologies and will ultimately support data speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. mmO2’s 3G network is scheduled to go live in the UK, Ireland and Germany in February next year.
