Nortel wins wireless broadband networks contract

2 Dec 2004

Canadian equipment manufacturer Nortel Networks has been selected by Russian telcos UWC, Apex and SSCC to deploy their wireless broadband network equipment. Construction on the networks is expected to begin in 1Q 2005 and will provide coverage to an estimated twelve million people in the Ural and Volga regions of Russia. Nortel will roll out CDMA2000 1x equipment including core access and radio access kit to enable the companies to launch services in the 450MHz band (CDMA450). As part of the deal, UWC has entered into a ‘project implementation’ arrangement with Russian firm RKT-Leasing, which will lease it the new network.
