Regulator unveils VoIP numbering scheme

26 Nov 2004

The German telecoms regulator RegTP has published the numbering allocation rules for voice-over-IP telephone services. RegTP says the numbers will be in the 032 range and, like mobile numbers, will be national and not linked to a particular locality. Operators are now able to apply for the new numbers in blocks of 1,000 and, to give them a fair chance, all applications received by 10 January will be considered to have been submitted at the same time. The regulator plans to allocate the first blocks of numbers later that month. The availability of a national numbering scheme will allow internet telephony providers to offer services anywhere in Germany without having to apply for numbers from any of the 5,200 local telephone areas. In addition, customers will be able to keep the same IP phone number even if they move to another region.
