3 breaks the two million subscriber barrier

26 Nov 2004

According to Telecom Paper, Hutchison Whampoa’s Italian UMTS operator 3 today signed up its two millionth customer, double the number it reported just four months ago. 3 has rolled out its high speed network to 70% of the Italian population and expects this to reach 75% by the end of the year. Despite concerns that 3 is buying its subscribers with low-cost voice packages, the Italian subsidiary reports that the demand for mobile data services is on the increase. Since April last year 3 said that more than 238 million multimedia downloads have been recorded, while the company’s La Tua TV video sessions have experienced a three-fold increase in watched minutes to 6.6 million, since July.
