mmO2 i-mode deal draws closer

25 Nov 2004

Speculation is mounting that UK-based mobile operator mmO2 is set to announce a tie-up with NTT DoCoMo of Japan to introduce i-mode mobile internet services in the UK, Ireland and Germany. Quoting sources close to the deal, the Financial Times claims that an agreement will be unveiled next week and the first services will be launched in 2005. There is no news, however, on how the companies will overcome the obstacle of E-Plus in Germany. The operator has already launched i-mode services as part of a wider deal between its parent KPN and DoCoMo, and will not be keen to see a second i-mode provider enter the German market. DoCoMo is eager to launch its mobile internet technology in the UK, though, to give it a presence in all of Europe’s major markets.
