Network rollout costing Telecom NZD1 million a day

24 Nov 2004

Telecom New Zealand is investing around NZD1 million each day to replace its old PSTN and X.25 and frame relay links with new VoIP, Ethernet and DSL technologies, according to chief technical officer Murray Milner. The upgrade, which is due to be completed in 2012, will see 600 local exchanges replaced with nine tier-one switches, 20 tier-two edge routers and 100 tier-three nodes which will be directly connected to telecom’s 7,000 roadside cabinets via fibre-optic links.
