MTN details massive network spend

23 Nov 2004

The MTN Group says it spent approximately NGN61 billion (USD470 million) in the six months to the end of September 2004 in expanding its Nigerian network via the commissioning of 334 new base stations and eight switches. The cellco has been forced to make rapid improvements to its infrastructure to meet the astronomical demand for services from subscribers. Between March and September its customer base grew by 32% to 2.587 million, whilst revenues increased by 38% to around NGN100 billion. MTN Nigeria is easily the most profitable of MTN’s six country markets, with monthly average revenue per subscriber standing at USD48 in September 2004, down from USD51 six months previously, but still more than three times the ARPU of its South African operations.
