Vodafone New Zealand, the country’s largest wireless operator, reported 1.757 million subscribers at the end of September 2004, a rise of 82,000 in the third quarter. The figures take Vodafone’s share of New Zealand’s mobile market to 56.2 percent, up around 1% in the quarter. Telecom Corp, the country’s largest fixed line operator, saw its own domestic mobile subscriber base increase to 1.367 million on 30 September, up 15,000 in Q3. Regardless of this rise, and despite Telecom’s recent NZD40 million investment in 3G services, the British cellco’s lead has continued to widen. Vodafone plans to launch its 3G service in New Zealand in mid-2005.
