Wataniya wins GSM licence

The Telecommunications Authority of Maldives (TAM) has awarded Kuwait-based Wataniya Telecom with a GSM licence in the Maldives. The regulator did not disclose any details on the licence award, but said it hoped to see a significant improvement in the quality of mobile services when the newcomer launches services. The country is currently served by Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun Private Ltd (Dhimobile) which launched its GSM-900 network in 1999Wataniya said the move was part of its strategy to expand its reach outside of the Middle East and North African regions.
