Cisco seals China Telecom backbone network deal

15 Nov 2004

US-based networking company Cisco Systems says it has won a contract to build a next-generation backbone network for China Telecommunications Corp. Cisco will roll out China Telecom Internet Protocol next Generation Network to more than 200 cities and provide equipment for the system covering provinces in central, eastern and southern China – the operator’s largest markets for internet-based traffic. The latest deal with China’s largest telecoms operator follows a string of contracts signed with the San Jose company in the last six months totalling more than USD100 million. The IP network is key to China Telecom’s plan to become a major player in the internet market over the next decade and will enable Chinese users to connect to overseas networks via VPN services. No financial details of the deal were disclosed.
