Ericsson has been selected by Econet Wireless Kenya to roll out its nationwide mobile network. The announcement of the USD75 million deal comes just weeks before the expiry of the Kenyan regulator’s deadline for Econet to pay its licence fee. Under the terms of the deal the Swedish vendor will provide an end-to-end solution for the operator, with the work due for completion by March 2005. Econet Wireless Group CEO Strive Masiyiwa hopes to launch the Kenyan operation by May or June 2005 and aims to sign up a million users within the first three years of operation. The Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) licensed Econet to operate the third cellular network in September 2003 ahead of Mobile Systems International, Kenya Telecommunications Investments and Telsar Solutions.
