Venezuelan mobile operator Movilnet has said that it will spend USD200 million in 2005 expanding its CDMA 1x network, up from USD160 million this year. By the end of next year the cellco is aiming to have increased the network’s capacity fivefold via a 45% hike in the number of installed CDMA 1x network radio base stations using EV-DO (Evolution Data Only) technology. Movilnet is planning to offer a raft of new services over the network in 2005, including ‘push-to-talk’, multimedia messaging and value added services for pre-paid users. Movilnet’s parent company CANTV has earmarked around USD800 million for investment in its mobile subsidiary between 2005 and 2009.
