Four licensed for underserved areas

8 Nov 2004

The South African telecoms regulator ICASA has awarded underserviced area licences (USALs) to Bokone Telecoms (covering the Limpopo and the Capricorn District), Thinta Thinta Telecoms (KwaZulu Natal, Ugu District), Kingdom Communications (Zululand) and Ilizwe Telecoms (Eastern Cape). A further three applications are being considered by the regulator. In all, 15 companies expressed an interest in securing a USAL, although two were disqualified for failing to meet minimum requirements. USALs permit operators to offer both wireline and wireless services.
