4 Nov 2004

Japanese telco Nippon Telegraph & Telephone (NTT) is to announce a JPY5 trillion plan to upgrade 30 million business and residential fixed lines to fibre-optic technology by 2010, according to a report in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The figure given represents about half the country’s wireline subscribers; the report hinted that the network changes are intended to accelerate the take-up and development of products and services such as videophones, internet video transmission and broadband-compatible televisions. NTT is expected to make an official announcement next week.
