One of Asia’s leading communications groups Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) says that the total number of mobile subscribers under its control in the region reached 56 million by 30 September, a rise of 38% year-on-year. This figure comprises its domestic mobile operations (which had 1.52 million subscribers at that date), SingTel Optus in Australia, plus the group’s four regional mobile associates – Advanced Info Service (Thailand), Bharti (India), Globe (Philippines) and Telkomsel in Indonesia. SingTel reports that it added 15 million subscribers in the twelve-month period, with most of the gains coming from overseas ventures: by the end of last month the four regional associated operators had 49 million users between them, up 43% on the corresponding period of 2003.
