Hutchison outlines network expansion plans

The Australian arm of Hutchison Telecommunications has said that within eighteen months it plans to double the capacity of its 3G network to 1.7 million subscribers and increase download speeds to 2Mbps from the current 384kbps. Hutchison 3G Australia (H3G), which recently extended the capacity of its network to 800,000 subscribers using equipment from Ericsson, said it will also be looking to enhance a number of its IT platforms, such as billing, video, voice call systems and content management. Hutchison said the AUD450 million infrastructure sharing agreement signed with Telstra in August would be largely unaffected by the upgrade as that deal principally covered the radio access network rather than the core network.
