Malaysia’s largest wireless operator Maxis has signed a three year framework agreement with Siemens to deliver and install equipment to upgrade its switching network to W-CDMA. The contract includes the option of deploying 3G radio network equipment and professional services, including network design and systems integration. Maxis expects to launch a commercial 3G service in the first quarter of 2005, and has set side MYR200 million as an initial investment. Siemens has been working with the cellco since 1995 as a preferred supplier of 2G technology. Maxis is one of two telcos to have been awarded 3G licences by the government in April 2003, the other being Telekom Malaysia. At the end of June 2004 Maxis claimed 5.12 million subscribers.
