MTC-Vodafone to migrate users to 3G

18 Oct 2004

Barhain’s second mobile operator MTC-Vodafone says it will begin the phased migration of all its 2G mobile subscribers to UMTS services, after it has achieved a full nationwide rollout of its high speed network at the end of the year. Although it currently has just 500 people signed up to 3G, the company hopes to focus on increasing its next-generation subscriber base as it looks to compete with the mobile arm of national PTO Batelco. MT-Vodafone recently contracted Nokia and Siemens to expand the network which presently covers a limited portion of the capital Manama. To accompany the focus on the technology, the cellco says it is looking to increase the supply both of 3G-enabled handsets and PC laptop modem cards.
