New models improve SonyEricsson results

The world’s fifth largest mobile phone manufacturer SonyEricsson says a leap in handset shipments has helped boost its third-quarter sales by 29%. The company, a 50/50 venture between Sony of Japan and Ericsson of Sweden, saw revenues of EUR1.68 billion in the three months to 30 September, up from EUR1.31 billion in the same period last year, while net profit was up 45% to EUR90 million. Handset shipments grew 51% to 10.7 million units.

The company said shipments of new mid and high-end models to the Japanese market has helped raise average selling prices from the previous quarter. The firm’s president, Miles Flint, says SonyEricsson is the leading player in the mobile imaging market; over 60% of shipments during the quarter were camera-enabled phones.
