Siemens get Flash

11 Oct 2004

German vendor Siemens is the latest company to give its backing to a new wireless data format intended to compete with existing CDMA and GSM technologies. Flash-OFDM, developed by New Jersey-based Flarion Technologies, is already being offered commercially by US cellco Nextel and claims to offer download speeds of more than one megabit per second. Vodafone and T-Mobile are currently trialling the technology in conjunction with Siemens with a view to a European launch in the second quarter of 2005. A Siemens spokesperson said that Flash-OFDM products will initially be available to laptop users, with services specific to mobile phones and other handheld devices to follow later in the year.
