DoCoMo and Qualcomm announce 3G joint venture initiative

Two leading players in the development of 3G, NTT DoCoMo of Japan and US-based Qualcomm, are teaming up to promote the Japanese cellco’s UMTS services based on the W-CDMA standard. The two companies plan to test whether mobile phones equipped with chipsets developed by Qualcomm can operate on DoCoMo’s 3G network, FOMA. Field tests are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
