UK-based mobile software developer Symbian says that it expects to see launches of 40 new handset models running its operating system (OS) in the next twelve to 18 months. The company claims that five million phones equipped with Symbian OS were shipped in the first half of this year and says that it expects to see as many as 200 million distributed annually by 2009. Symbian, whose investors include handset manufacturers Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Panasonic and Siemens, is planning to take on 300 new staff by the end of next year as its business grows.
