ZTE ties up CDMA deal with ETC subsidiary VPT

30 Sep 2004

China’s ZTE Corp has won the contract to build out the second phase of Vietnam Power Telecom’s CDMA2000 1x wireless in the local loop (WiLL) network. The project covers 13 provinces, including Vietnam’s most densely populated areas and business regions. Power Telecom is a subsidiary of the Electricity Telecommunication Company (ETC), which is affiliated to state-owned Electricity of Vietnam. It was licensed to provide the full range of fixed line telephony services in early 2003; ZTE began rolling out the first phase of its network shortly afterwards, covering Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Ha. The Vietnamese wireline market is dominated by state-owned Vietnam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT), which held a monopoly on the sector until a round of licensing in 2003.
