Regulator considers sale of two 3G concessions

30 Sep 2004

Filipino regulator the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has revealed that it is considering selling two 3G licences in the first quarter of 2005, with plans to have the services available commercially by the end of 2006 or early 2007. The regulator has received applications for the licences from local companies Multimedia Telephony Inc and Connectivity Unlimited Resources Enterprises Inc (CURE), although the latter’s application has been opposed by cellcos Smart Communications and Globe Telecom, which claim that there is no urgent need to roll out 3G services in the country. Before issuing the licences the NTC must publish the final guidelines for the rollout of 3G technology, expected by the end of October.
