Centennial to abandon long-distance billing

30 Sep 2004

The Puerto Rican division of US telco Centennial has revealed plans to ditch domestic long-distance charges from 8 November by converting the island into a single local telephony area. Centennial Business Solutions, which boasts around 5,000 customers, half of which are residential, currently divides the island into 14 local telephony areas. The company anticipates that the move will cut customers bills by up to 60% in some cases, allowing it to make a greater challenge to the incumbent operator, PRT. PRT currently dominates the wireline market in Puerto Rico, operating 99% of the country’s 1.3 million fixed lines.
