27 Sep 2004

Lucent Technologies has been awarded a contract to expand the cdma2000 network of Mexico’s Grupo Iusacell. In addition to increasing the capacity of the network in all of Iusacell’s operating regions, Lucent will also supply network updates, a network security platform and all related services. Iusacell launched its cdma2000 1xRTT offering on a nationwide basis in July 2004, having initially launched the service in Mexico City in January 2003, again using equipment supplied by Lucent Technologies. Iusacell operates in seven of Mexico’s nine telecoms regions, giving it coverage of the country’s principal conurbations including Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, Acapulco, Puebla, Leon and Merida. At the end of June 2004 it claimed 1.3 million subscribers.
