Algérie Télécom has contracted Huawei Technologies as the sole supplier of UMTS equipment for its 3G network trials. Huawei will provide end-to-end solutions, including base stations, a data platform and handsets, for the network, which will cover a number of major urban areas in the capital Algiers, as well as the presidential office, the airport and major hotels. The incumbent operates in the Algerian mobile market under the Mobilis brand, though it controls little more than 10% of all users, with Djezzy GSM – a subsidiary of Egyptian telecoms group Orascom Telecom – leading the market.
According to local media, Algérie Télécom has also contracted Huawei to supply and install an 80,000 capacity CDMA wireless in the local loop (WiLL) network in the Annaba region. The deal is said to be worth around USD28 million.
