DoCoMo mulls alliance with Cingular – or maybe others

24 Sep 2004

Japanese mobile heavyweight NTT DoCoMo is considering the possibility of teaming up with US cellco Cingular Wireless, or other mobile operators, as it looks to expand the footprint of its technologies and services in the global telecoms market. Although formal talks are yet to begin, DoCoMo is reportedly interested in a tie-up with Cingular which is in the throes of completing the purchase of DoCoMo’s US partner, AT&T Wireless. Some Japanese newspapers have been carrying a story suggesting that the two parties could finalise a deal as early as Spring 2005, following which DoCoMo would supply the US company with its proprietary 3G mobile service technology and handset software
