Telemig and Claro win spectrum

23 Sep 2004

The Brazilian government’s latest mobile spectrum auction has seen existing players Claro and Telemig Celular emerge as the winning bidders, with both expanding their service areas. America Móvil subsidiary Claro paid USD17.8 million for a cellular concession covering the state of Minas Gerais, while Telemig, which is backed by Banco Opportunity, acquired a licence in the Mineiro Triangle area. Additional licences in the country’s wealthiest state, Sao Paolo, attracted no interest, although competition there is already fierce, with Claro competing with the Telefónica/Portugal Telecom venture Vivo and TIM Brasil.
