Thai firms attracting foreign interest

22 Sep 2004

Thailand’s Minister of Information and Communications has revealed that a number of foreign companies are interested in investing in two state-run telcos. Surapong Suebwonglee says international call operator CAT Telecom and local and long-distance service provider TOT Corporation have attracted interest from fund managers keen to invest in the country’s newly liberalised telecoms market. The government recently set up a new regulatory authority, the National Telecommunications Committee, which it is hoped will help bring more competition to wireline and wireless markets. Thailand was home to around 6.6 million fixed line subscribers by March 2004, with a relatively low teledensity of around 11%.
