NTL unveils local loop rollout plan

21 Sep 2004

The UK’s leading cable TV operator, NTL, has said it plans to invest approximately GBP60 million to co-locate its switching equipment in around 300 local exchanges operated by the country’s incumbent wireline operator, BT Group. The initiative will give NTL access to a further two million households, on top of the eight million it currently covers, to which it plans to offer broadband and interactive viewing services using BT’s last-mile (copper) connections. NTL has been prompted to embark on the rollout plan by recent reductions in the local loop unbundling tariffs charged by BT. It follows the announcement last week of a similar initiative by Cable & Wireless.
