Ericsson: two billion mobiles by 2006

21 Sep 2004

Carl-Henric Svanberg, Chief Executive of Swedish equipment manufacturer Ericsson, has said that he expects emerging markets to drive the number of mobile subscribers worldwide to over two billion by the start of 2006, up from the current figure of around 1.5 billion. Speaking at a technology conference in New Delhi, Mr Svanberg said that he believed exponential growth in markets such as India and China would more than compensate for the stagnation being experienced in some of the world’s more mature mobile markets. He also told reporters that he believed confidence was returning to the telecommunications sector in general, and that ‘Growth will return from 2005 / 2006,’ driven by the rising demand for third-generation mobile telephony services.
