Report pushes mobile music

15 Sep 2004

A new report by Strategy Analytics has suggested that mobile music services will be the next major business opportunity for 3G service providers. The report claims that so-called cellular music decks (CMDs) – which combine music players with traditional mobile phone functionality – will account for more than half of all handset sales by 2009.

Some equipment manufacturers, especially in Europe, have already made moves into the CMD arena; Nokia has introduced its 3300 and 5510 handsets which include MP3 players and FM radios, while Motorola has forged music-focused alliances with companies such as MTV and Apple. The report suggests that Asian manufacturers are falling behind as they concentrate their efforts on the still and video imaging markets.
