India’s telecoms minister has called for a massive investment in the country’s communications infrastructure to achieve his target of 200 million to 250 million phone lines by 2007. Dayanidhi Maran told a telecoms equipment conference that operators should be looking to invest INR1.25 trillion (EUR22.2 billion) over the next three years. The country currently has around 85 million fixed and mobile lines in service, including a growing number of connections served by wireless local loop networks.
