Telstra sale would be opposed by Green Party

8 Sep 2004

Any attempt to sell off the government’s entire stake in national PTO Telstra would be opposed by the Green Party, according to Greens’ senator Bob Brown. Senator Brown had earlier indicated a willingness to get behind a sale, subject to the ‘right environmental projects’ being on the table. However, he has now retracted, saying that under no circumstances would he support the sale of an organisation that is vital in providing services to both the city and the bush. The Greens fear that a fully privatised telecoms operator would focus its efforts on the higher value urban markets to the detriment of smaller rural communities.
