Smartcom launches 3G in Santiago

3 Sep 2004

Chilean wireless operator Smartcom has launched a CDMA2000 1x EV-DO network in the capital Santiago using equipment supplied by Nortel Networks. The launch of a 3G platform follows the 2001 installation of a 1xRTT network offering speeds of up to 156kbps. The RTT network now covers approximately 80% of the population including Santiago, the coastal towns of Region V and various other towns as far south as Temuco. Of Smartcom’s 1.4 million customers, around 20,000 use the 1xRTT network with the rest using its CDMA IS-95 platform.
