BT under fire for broadband prices

1 Sep 2004

UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom is threatening action against BT over the company’s residential broadband pricing. The regulator says the company’s charges have infringed Section 18 of the UK’s 1998 Competition Act and Article 82 of the EC Treaty. It has sent BT a Statement of Objections which includes the details of the case and its proposed course of action. The telco now has the opportunity to make written and oral representations in reply to the charges and these will be taken into account when the regulator makes its final decision.

The investigation into BT’s broadband charges was launched by Ofcom’s predecessor Oftel following a complaint by the French-owned ISP Wanadoo. The probe is continuing.
