New MVNO on the way?

31 Aug 2004

The French government’s wish to increase competition in the mobile market may soon be answered following news that Neuf Telecom, part of the French trading house Louis Dreyfus, is in discussion with Bouygues Telecom and SFR over the possibility of forming a new MVNO venture.

France is western Europe’s fourth largest mobile market in terms of subscribers behind Germany, Italy and the UK, although it has one of the region’s lowest cellular penetration rates – less than 67% at the end of 2003. At that date the market supported 39.792 million subscribers, up from 36.85 million twelve months earlier. The largest of the three existing GSM operators is the France Télécom subsidiary Orange, which had 19.16 million customers and a 48.1% market share at the end of 2003, ahead of SFR and Bouygues Télécom with shares of 35.7% and 16.2% respectively.
