Wataniya Telecom Algeria yesterday launched its commercial network under the brand name Nedjma, making it the third mobile operator in the country. Wataniya plans to invest USD320 million in the project over the next three years and hopes to pick up subscribers by capitalising on Nedjma’s GPRS and WAP capabilities. At launch the network covered the provinces of Algiers, Bournerdes, Tipazza, Oran and Constantine. With a population of over 33 million people and a cellular penetration rate of around 5%, the newcomer sees Algeria as offering huge opportunities for growth. It hopes to sign up a million users by the end of 2005.
