PTA licenses ISPs to provide DSL over their own networks

26 Aug 2004

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has licensed all the country’s ISPs to provide DSL services over their own equipment, as part of a plan to improve the supply and quality of broadband services and stimulate growth in the sector. The ISPs will be able to collocate DSL multiplexer (DSLAM) equipment in local exchanges as a means of offering their own services to end users, and will be allowed to interconnect with any of the 73 new local loop licensees in the country. At the end of May 2004 there were 2,852 DSL subscribers in Pakistan, up from 1,288 at the end of 2003.
