Motorola tipped for DoCoMo 3G contract

24 Aug 2004

NTT DoCoMo is expected to announce a deal to make Motorola the main supplier of handsets for its FOMA 3G network this week, giving the US vendor its first significant chance of breaking the dominance of domestic manufacturers in the Japanese market. NEC and Matsushita control the country’s market, whilst major international players like Motorola, Nokia and Ericsson have so far been unable to gain a significant foothold. DoCoMo has also been in talks with Nokia, though both parties have yet to comment.
