VSNL to unveil broadband expansion plans

19 Aug 2004

Indian long-distance and international wireline operator VSNL has said it plans to roll out broadband access services across the country’s eight largest cities by the end of the year, according to local press reports. VSNL is part-owned by the Tata Group and currently offers dial-up internet access services to around 800,000 subscribers and broadband IP services to a further 30,000. In a bid to boost customer numbers, the operator plans to adopt a new strategy of selling internet access packages at automated teller machines. To this end it claims to have signed a distribution deal with ICICI Bank and is looking to forge similar agreements with the State Bank of India and HDFC Bank.
