Japanese chip manufacturer NEC Electronics reported a 44% rise in profits for the three months to 30 June 2004, thanks to strong sales of semiconductors for use in products ranging from mobile phones to DVD recorders and PCs. The company said sales rose to JPY185.6 billion, from JPY169.7 billion a year ago, and operating profit increased to JPY15.2 billion from JPY11.9 billion. Sales of communications chips performed steadily, rising by 15% year-on-year to JPY41.1 billion and the only category which failed to show growth was the company’s multi-market integrated circuits, sales of which dipped 13% to JPY19.4 billion.
