In its 14th semiannual report the China Network Information Centre (CNIC) has revealed that 87 million people now use the internet in the country (equivalent to 6.6% of the total population), compared to just 620,000 in July 1997 when the survey began. The report goes on to state that 36.3 million computers are connected to the internet, an increase of 17.5% on the start of the year, while the number of China-registered domain names has increased 32% in twelve months to 620,000. Two provinces – Guangdong and Zhejiang – together with the municipalities of Shanghai and Beijing, are home to almost 57% of websites.
